Geographic Information Systems (GIS)

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is a technology used to create, manage, analyse and map many different types of spatial data. It plays an important role in helping us understand landscapes, identify constraints and support informed planning decisions.

Within our projects, GIS is used for a range of tasks – from plotting photography locations and viewpoints to producing detailed mapping that supports landscape and visual assessments.
Zone of Theoretical Visibility (ZTV) modelling forms a key part of our work. We use high-resolution terrain data to analyse potential visibility across the surrounding landscape and identify where a proposed development may theoretically be seen from. This process helps guide viewpoint selection and supports the wider Landscape and Visual Impact Assessment (LVIA) process.
GIS is also used to produce constraint maps, showing important environmental, heritage and landscape features within and around a site. By bringing this information together into a single map, we can quickly identify potential constraints and gain a clearer understanding of the surrounding landscape.
